Packing and Crating Tips

PACKING, LABELING AND MARKING OF SPECIFIC TYPE OF CARGO

  1. Upon arrival of cargoes at the Cargo Warehouse, the packages must be checked. If packaging is not appropriate, advise the shipper accordingly for disposition.
    1. General Rules
      1. Ensure internal cushioning is packed around all sides of the item and wrap enough times that cannot feel the shape of the object.
      2. Items packed together in one container should be individually wrapped and separated from each other with cushioning material.
      3. Heavy items require internal cushioning to prevent movement during delivery as this may damage the outer packaging.
      4. For external packaging, cardboard cartons are generally strong enough to ship items of average size and weight.
      5. Wooden crates should be used for heavy items.
    2. Helpful Packing Suggestions as guidance to Shippers. Listed are some helpful hints to keep in mind when accepting package(s) for shipping.
      1. Shrink wrap package or pallet to protect from the weather elements.
      2. Use permanent markers to label package(s).
      3. Remove old labels and obliterate old marking on package(s).
      4. Use original packaging when available. If possible, avoid shipments in worn or deteriorated cardboard boxes.
      5. Use proper inner packaging (i.e. Styrofoam inserts, Styrofoam “peanuts”, bubble-wrapper or shrink wrapper).
      6. Do not over pack – seams may burst
